A most popular tradition in Marrakesh to have good relaxation is by visiting a Moroccan Hammam. Tradionnal bathhouses in Morocco can be found in each neighborhood, and for locals, going to Hammams is almost a weekly ritual.

The purity of the body is an important part of life in Islamic communities, usually Muslims go to hammams each Thursday in order to be clean and ready for Friday prayer.

How to hammam?

How to Hammam

First of all, you need to know that neighborhood hammams are slightly different from private hammams in Spa Centers or hotels where you can do all the hammam procedure alone in complete privacy.

You will be guided with a local hammam agent to the changing room where you will have to take off your clothes and keep only your underwear like on the beach. The next step is to spend 15 to 25 minutes into a hot steam room using the olive oil soap named ‘Beldi soap’.

After the exfoliation in the steam room, you will have to rinse and wash the beldi soap, then the local agent will help you to take off the dead skin by scrubbing your body with a special glove ‘The Kessa’.

Finally, when you finish the scrub procedure, you will need to clean your body with bath soap and wash your hear with shampoo.

It is important to mention that for a private hammam you need to bring only clothes to change after your session, however, if you are considering to use the public hammam, you will also need your own Kessa glove, beldi soap, shampoo and towels.

Normally, the entrance fees to neighborhood hammams are between 10 to 20 MAD, and you are free to scrub yourself or pay about 50 Dhs for hammam attendant.

Today, the private hammams become increasingly more popular in Marrakesh and can be found in Spa Centers, hotels and traditional guest houses. Below a short selection of the best hammams in Marrakesh:
