As a general fact you should know that Marrakech is the most visited city in Morocco in which you will find a lot of tourism, even becoming a bit overwhelming if you are at rush hour in the most visited places.
Medersa Ben Youssef
Entering the Medersa Ben Youssef is one of the best things to see and do in Marrakech, without any doubt.
This Muslim school is the largest in Morocco and was built in the 14th century. The central courtyard is spectacular with an incredible iron chandelier, the arches and walls decorated with tiles, and the walls covered with handmade zellige, cedar, stucco and marble panels.
At one time, 800 students memorized the Koran in its 130 cells until 1960. It has now become one of the must-see places to visit in Marrakech.
Finding the Saadian Tombs in the Medina is a bit tricky, so we are not surprised that these tombs dating back to the 16th century were not found again until 1917.
We have to say that this is one of our favorite places to see in Marrakech, located on the right side of the Moulay El Yazid Mosque, near the great Bab Agnaou gate, and accessed by a narrow passageway.
The mausoleum of the Hall of the Twelve Columns is the most beautiful place, with its twelve white marble columns supporting a handmade cedar wood dome that is a real marvel.
The city center
If you want to visit Marrakech in a big way then start with Jemaa el-Fna square, the heart of the medina of Marrakech. It could be considered the pure essence of the city, a place full of life, a hive of characters, vendors, impromptu restaurants, fruit stalls and flashy shows.
The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque is the most famous icon of Marrakech. With its 77 meters high, it conquers the sky of the city and becomes the target of tourists’ cameras at any time of the day. Although access is reserved for Muslims, it is worth seeing it from the outside, it is impressive.
As a curious fact for our visitors it seems the only great mosque that can be visited in Morocco is the one in Casablanca.
Also if you want to see a natural place to relax that place is the Majorelle Garden, a botanical gardens full of local and exotic plants. And when we say full is that it is so: apparently they have more than 300 different species, quite beautiful view of this garden.
With that we will have said some of the many things we can do in this great city, which will give us an experience difficult to forget.
